I've noticed this same phenomenon on my SE with internal 20 meg (from Apple)...

Are there any INIT or CDEV files that would cause this?  I don't have a screen-
saver (I use Stars), and can't think of anything else off hand that I think
would need to check the drive at all (no INITs that I have currently).

Weird.
