I fill pretty silly not realising this in the first place. It was pointed out to me that multifinder will occassionally hcek the desktop to see if any programs have made changes. Since I rarely used multifinder before I purchased the SE/30 I had never noticed the drive accesses before. Unfortunately I do not have the letter from the person who pointed this out to me, so I cannot give credit where credit is do. It was also pointed out to me that if you use a spooler or the disk cache you also observe this phenomena, but I don't use either. Thanks for the responses folks.
