After some annoying crashes, I have completely de-YP'ed my 386i, WITHOUT
having to "unconfigure" (see v7n133, brosen@bbn.com).

Firstly, I set up as many accounts as I could think of, and added two
extra AT ports, using SNAP. Likewise printer, PC's under PC-NFS, etc. Then
I did steps 6 and 7 of the procedure in v7n133: renamed /usr/etc/ypbind
and /usr/etc/ypserv, and edited the /etc files. In particular, I appended
yppasswd to passwd (after removing the +::: line at the end of passwd),
and similarly for the other files with yp... equivalents. Also edited
rc.local to comment out ipallocd and a couple of other related things.

When I rebooted, everything came up fine except the links to home
directories were lost; I edited passwd to put in the full paths to home
directories.

This is a rather brief account, from memory. The point basically is that
it's easy to de-Yellow Page a 386i; ofcourse you can't use SNAP after
that. I have not had any problems since then. I would hope that in future
releases of SunOS for the 386i a no-YP option will be included, as for Sun
3 and 4, for those of us in a non-YP environment. I believe Sun may do
that.
