The major reason I complained was that I remember getting lots of empty mail from cron, although that does not seem reproducible now. In any case, a number of kind readers have convinced me that the way the 4.0 cron works is a feature and not a bug, and that it's nice to easily be able to know what's happening in the wee hours of the morning.
