Two printed reference materials that are very good: White Paper: "UNIX System V and BSD4.2 Compatibility Study", Joseph Uniejewski, Apollo Computer Inc., March 1985. Magazine: "No Longer An Outcast", Jonathan Cohler, Digital Review, January 1985. There is also a book out but I don't remember the title (although "Portability" is part of it, I think).
