Apologies to uninterested parties. Try this: xmodmap -e 'keycode 0xb1 = Alt_L Meta_L' When first shipped, the DEC server only sends the 'Alt_L' code for the `compose character' key. This line also makes the server send `Meta_L' which is what emacs wants to see. This is a suggestion from a dude at DEC. I'm not having the meta problem anymore because I have native X support, but you might have some success with this method. Good luck! _MelloN_
