For the person looking for a device from which he can
monitor his home from a remote location, with a microphone:
I have a panasonic answering machine (KT-1843???) that retails for
about $90. Among its numerous features, it has a remote listen
feature which allows you (from a remote touch tone) to turn on
its microphone. You can then hear any noise  from the room the
answering machine is located in.
