This allows the modem to handle speed conversion on dialup, and allows the caller to specify whatever protocol support they require. On uucp dialouts, the modem chat script includes the commands to set 50=255 and 111=30 for PEP connections. This is simple in HDB uucp (using the Dialers entry), but it's also easy for v7 uucp's: foo Any ACU 9600 15551212;s50=255;s111=30;d ogin: ... Of course if your v7 uucico likes to treat ';' as a delay character (did someone say Ultrix?) you are SOL unless you have source, or like editing binaries with emacs (which isn't as hard as it might sound in this case - in the Ultrix 1.2 uucico the character ';' only appears in five places that are likely candidates - you get to guess which one it is :-) [ Something else: turn OFF flow control.
