The National Park Service has posted signs at Assateague entrances announcing
a prohibition of such.  Of course, once you get to the beach, you are free
to walk as far North as you can manage.  Few people care to traipse through
sand for more than a couple of hundred yards, so the walk is worth the
trouble--just to get away from the crowd right at the bathhouses.  Once
you get there ...
