I showed them two listings of a program I'm currently responsible for. The first was the one I got when I took over maintenance of the (extremely buggy) code. The second is what the code looks like now (bug free, as far as I know). Don't know if it helped, but they were on the point of hiring me when the job got moved from Berkeley to Boston.
