A 'SmartCom I?' Sounds suspiciously like an old 300 baud card. You'll be disappointed trying to do VT100 at 300 buad. Your best bet is Kermit-65 (freeware: ftp from cunicx.cc.Columbia.Edu) or KERMSRV@CUVMA.BITNET (and a couple of other servers including via UUCP from 'okstate'). Rifle through the past week or so of comp.sys.apple, instructions about how to get Kermit have appeared several times quite recently.
