Monochrome monitors in particular don't like being turned on without any synch information: they make a noise like they're in pain, if your ears can pick it up. Here's a good chance to say NEVER LEAVE YOUR ATARI MONOCHROME MONITOR ON (for long) AFTER TURNING OFF YOUR COMPUTER.
