  well there's a nice PD fortran compiler written by some folks at
  CERN which runs on the ST under OS-9... the compiler is called RTF/68K
  and is basically a souped up dialect of VAX fortran.  it supports things
  like register variables, pointers, inline assembly, and several types of
  hardware floating point.  the software floating point isnt so great
  -- about 30 Kwhets -- which is 3 times slower than software needs to
  be, but since OS-9 internally converts everything to double precision
  you get stuck with C like speeds and largely useless extra precision...

  if you have OS-9, RTF is definitely worth getting.
