I think that the proper placement of the mouse on the first try has less to do
with your fingers motor reponses and more to do with your hand-eye
coordination.  It quickly becomes second nature for many people to associate
the mouse movement with the movement of the cursor.  It becomes a natural
extension of your arm.
  However, after teaching Mac classes for a while, I quickly found that many
people can NOT adjust to this extension.  Had a few who insisted the mouse
would not go where they wanted it to--when I turned it right-side up for them,
it worked a lot better.  They still had trouble, though.
