I usually use a mouse pad, but I'm not sure that I want to be forced to use one at all times. It's nice to use a clean desktop for mousing around when the pad isn't big enough. I hope apple doesn't switch to optical mice. If I am wrong in thinking that the special mousepad is required, I retract my comment.
