There is a jumper on many disk drives that chooses between 1 more or less sector per track, you might check the the Maxtor has one, and set it to 53 sectors per track if so. I seem to recall a bug in earlier version of Sunos that wouldn't allow more than 1400 or so cyulinders, but maybe it's fixed now.
