I'm running 4.3BSD on a VAX and the problem is with the "talk" software. The default version is "talk" which runs the "/etc/ntalkd" daemon on service 518/udp. My Ultrix machine and all the SUN's I'm etherneted to use what 4.3BSD now terms old talk. "/usr/old/talk" using the "/etc/talkd" daemon on service 517/udp. If I use "new talk" locally or with other 4.3BSD machines, things are fine. Both old and new talk though, won't talk to Ultrix/talk or SUN/talk. (which are "old talk" also) On the caller's side, I get "Checking for invitation on caller's machine" and "talk" appears to hang. In the callee's side, I get the request, ("please reply with /usr/old/talk...") and cannot connect. Does this sound familiar? Has anyone a fix for this? Many Thanks in Advance!
