What host name string do I use when my server is a local sun (sal3.usc.edu)
on a domain (usc.edu or oberon.usc.edu) when my local sun is unknown to the 
name server at a remote INTERNET site (overlord.jcs.mil)?  Let's say, for
the purposes of this query, that it is politically infeasible to get the
local sun specifically added to the name server list at the client site.

If I am running a server on the console of oberon.usc.edu then using "setenv 
DISPLAY oberon.usc.edu:0.0" has no problem running clients on overlord.jcs.mil 
... However, if we run a server on sal3.usc.edu ... then neither
       "setenv DISPLAY sal3.usc.edu:0.0" ... or 
       "setenv DISPLAY sal3.usc.edu@oberon.usc.edu:0.0" 
will permit clients on overlord.jcs.mil to display anything on the server.  
The error returned is: "X Toolkit Error: Can't Open display" ... so, what
is the correct form of a DISPLAY name to connect overlord to sal3 ???
