Keywords: alloca(), Sun4, OS3, installation, first time, novice Message-ID: <353@nyit.UUCP> Date: 4 May 89 06:57:03 GMT Organization: NYIT Computer Graphics Lab., Old Westbury, N.Y. Lines: 24 OK, this is the my first time trying to put X on a machine. We've got the distribution tapes for X11R3 straight from MIT. The README file says that it installs on a Sun3 but nothing about a Sun4. OK, let's try it anyway. After a lot of reading and browsing I decide to not edit anything and just try a straight make World from the top. Whoops! Stack size too small. OK I reset some limits. Now what I'm getting is the loader complaing about not being able to find alloca(). Yup, sur-nuff, the only place alloca() exist is on the manual page. Perhaps they've fixed this in OS4, but we've heard SO many BAD things about OS4 that we feel much better leaving the tape in the box it came in. There must be lots of folks out there with X windows running on a color 4/260 running OS3. I'd be very grateful if one of you could pass on some wisdom to me. Thanks, philabs!nyit!michael
