          advanced  utility  that  has never been written. 


My question: Has anyone ever bothered to construct such an advanced
utility?  In particular, being able to do some processing on image data
before it is displayed (down-sampling, re-mapping of colors, etc.) and
being able to display the image at locations other than its original
position would be desirable features.

Has anyone done any work in this area?  Certainly someone has done
something...
