  Somewhere in the distant past I read about a variable that would 
turn off the display of control characters in a buffer...

Is this simply a mad raving of a deranged mind or is there really such 
a convieniant item?

If there is not, how would one go about putting one in.. Or would that 
require too much effort (like a major mod in the inner workings)?
