Elm has a *feature* that causes it to point to the oldest unread message on startup. This feature is controlled by the 'pointnew' setting in your elmrc file. To disable this, in your elmrc find the "pointnew" line and set it to "pointnew = OFF". For the record, I really like this feature. Of course, I'm widely becoming known as weird.
