I have seen others reporting similar problems, too. I don't quite understand this; I successfully installed Andrew on a Sun running SunOS 4.0.1 (with X11R3) a couple of days ago. I only had to apply minor modifications to a few files (e.g. certain #include's had to be changed for SunOS 4.0). The dynamic loading stuff worked fine without any changes.
