Thanks to John Schilling of Commodore QA and Elliot Hammett for pointing me in the direction of DiskDoctor and DiskSalv. Diskdoctor worked just fine at fixing the disk and I retrieved my files intact. All I had to do was run DiskDoctor BEFORE I inserted my corrupted floppy. John also pointed out that Commodore was aware that corrupt disks sometimes cause the machine to guru and they are working hard on a solution for 1.4. He also noted that they are indeed working on the customer service phone system, which could explain my sudden disconnection.
