The only real limitation with this incompatibility would be that a P8 program that didn't use block access wouldn't be able to copy or backup the files. A P8 program that knows about the special format of forked files could always read the index blocks and get to the data anyway though. There's also no real reason why P8 couldn't be updated to include the two types of OPEN present in GS/OS though again only programs written after this change would be able to use the files.
