It increase effective disk access speed considerably (up to 7 times average with some programs). You could also use it as a RAM DISK (using DOS's VDISK driver). MicroSoft Excel comes with a HIMEM driver to automatically use the extra RAM. And what is the real difference between extended, expanded, LIM, etc. memory: what programs can and can't use which... Also, particularly: What type, and how much, RAM can an AT in protected mode use?
