(This always seemed like a bug to me :-) I don't know for sure, but it is likely that this will be fixed. Both the desktop and the trash will be implemented as special directories in System 7.0. This not only fixes anomalies such as these, but gives applications a way to put things in those places (when needed -- you should do this only at the user's request).
