There is a good article by Tamassia, Battista and Batini in IEEE Transactions
on Systems, Man, and Cybernetics, Vol 18, No 1, Jan/Feb 1988, pp. 61-79.
Its title is "Automatic Graph Drawing and Readability of Diagrams".

I'd be interested in any other approaches and code, as well.
