In GNU Emacs 18.54.1 of Wed May 10 1989 on a sun3 (berkeley-unix)

Observed on a Sun3 running mmdf:

"M-x rmail" occasionally blows up, signaling an error.
"args out of range ...."

Attempting to save the file via rmail-expunge-and-save meets with
another error at rmail-show-message:goto-char (nil).

The immidiate problem is that rmail-messages-vector is a 
vector of markers not pointing anywhere.

This problem is not frequent enough to observe the bug in action via
single stepping any particular (rmail).
