The majority of the articles in this newsgroup originate from other networks, such as the BITNET mailing list L-HCAP, the Fidonet ABLED conference and 5 or 6 other Fidonet conferences, and a few other small networks that are linked in manually. It is just not feasible to put "References" lines in these articles. I would think that any software that is going to use the References line would also require some sort of alternate method such as the one that "rn" uses where the message thread is based upon the Subject line.
