Message-ID: <3246@looking.UUCP> Date: 14 May 89 06:03:10 GMT Organization: Looking Glass Software, Waterloo Ont. Lines: 21 New Jersey legislators are working on a bill to outlaw distribution of "obscene" sexually-explicit material over home computers. The bill passed 4-0 in committee, and will allow fine or imprisonment for computer distribution of obsence stuff. The whole assembly will vote on it shortly. "Obscene" is to be defined later, I think, and will, they say, not include erotica and soft-core, etc. From Charles Bowen's "Networker's Journal," the following quote: Fellow sponsor Thomas Shusted, chairman of the judiciary committee, added, "Many school-age children use home computers for schoolwork and recreational purposes. I'm sure parents would feel more comfortable if this type of smut was banned from computer network systems." This is not the first such law that might make net material, from alt.sex to my favourite group, illegal. But the number of these laws is growing, folks. Sigh. -- Brad Templeton, Looking Glass Software Ltd. -- Waterloo, Ontario 519/884-7473
