One major problem here is that a one-character TCP/IP packet is too big to fit in the TB's reverse-path packets. If you attended San Diego Usenix and used the terminal room, its Internet connection was via Trailblazer, and it worked fine... thanks to Van Jacobson's header-compression code, which shrinks things down enough.
