Measured variations in gamma have ranged between 2.0 and 2.9 on monitors from four different manufacturers. Variation in gamma from a single manufacturer has been about as wide. I perfer a gamma correction value of 2.2 for most displays, but 2.5 may be a better "average" value to use on all systems. Setting the gamma value to something close to the optimum is much better than no gamma correction at all. --- Scott R.
