Lines: 32 I was asked to answer this question, but Karl has done a far better job than I would have. (Thanks, Karl.) To clear one minor point, 'Central' actually means 'Central US'. There are also, 'East', 'West', ''Corp', 'Eng', 'UK', and so forth. Each is a 'sphere of influence', as it were. Yes, UUCP is here to stay. However, as other have pointed out, its very inelegant to address with. I'll not start the 'uucp as a transport protocol' fight. (Not Here! :-) Most people who have delt with 'domain-style' addressing prefer it, though. I too remember thinking 'what the Heck is this stuff?'. It helps to imagine reading the domain from the right. '(sun is part of com, central is part of sun.com, hemaneh is part of central.sun.com, jthomp is part of hemaneh.central.sun.com. As also stated before, you can have a machine 'named' hemaneh, and so can I (and so can thousands of others) under this scheme. I will admit that sun.com is doing an evil thing with its rewritting. I'll see what I can do, though it will take some time. There were basicly 'good' reasons for doing what has been wrought. Without going into details, the decision was (back when things were a lot more broken), that internal mail was the most important. Hence the cruft. Sorry.
