They don't get any money for it! Since they're doing all this as a volunteer effort, as far as I know, they decided to keep it simple and have no wildcard MXs and no delegations of authority. The concept is that if you have an organization big enough to have its own nameserver and a lot of names, that you can be a .ORG; they've developed .US for individual sites. If anyone on the Internet has any problems with "one of those weird .US domains", the NIC can ask Ann or Jon and they'll know everything there is to know about the domain. With NS delegations (or wildcard MXs), they won't be able to say with certainty what is and isn't legal and who's responsible for it.
