Thanks for all those who replied to my (rather stupid) request for help. 
The replies confirmed what I thought should work, namely that one should be 
able to go straight out of port 9 on the DELNI on to thinwire through a
normal transceiver. Now comes the stupid bit - I had a broken DELNI. Worked
OK in stand-alone mode but port 9 was dead. Replaced DELNI, everything works
fine.

I got more help from the net in a couple of days than I managed to get from
DEC in about two weeks. Then again, what's new?
