MINIX is a good tool for teaching and learning about OS. However, not only do you have to keep up with the market trend in hardware ie 286/386 machines, it is also imperative to teach the principles of protected mode hardware and its influence on OS. I intend to upgrade to 286 MINIX and run it from now on. Nevertheless, I do agree with another MINIX devotee that MINIX needs a C compiler that produces large model programs. That is it.
