I finished Dungeon Master about 2 months ago, so I don't remember -exactly- how I solved this problem. Have you tried walking backwards anti-clockwise a couple of times 'round the block ? (Look carefully for iron keys, switches on walls, etc.) As far as I can remember, you'll have to walk around the pillar about 5 times, finding different items on every pass.(2 keys!) Good luck!
