I also had no problem building TeX and LaTeX using the Washington distribution and web2c on a 319 and 340 under 6.2 and 6.5. Under the current X11 distribution from HP (== MIT Release 2) we use xdvi from comp.sources.x. No problem here. Under X10, HP supplied a hack to the old xdvi (xdvi-hp) which was built with the X10 XRay kit. Again no problems. PostScript output falls into two parts:- For printers: dvi2ps available on the Washington tape needed a very small amount of massage to work. For displays: This is less succesful. We use the Rutherford Labs (UK) X11 version PostScript interpreter (ralpage) for drafting easy pictures and include them in LaTeX files with psfigtex. I have not yet been able to get dvi2ps output of complete documents to successfully display through ralpage. Fortunately xdvi kindly leaves a 'Watch This Space' space where the PS should appear, so we manage. Paul Breslaw. mcvax!cernvax!mecazh!paul
