If you REALLY believe that protection in needed, try getting information on hardware lock devices (specially ones that plug into the printer port, the whole-card- slot ones are yesterday's technology). They are reasonably usable, and they do not hinder any legal use of the program (including backups), and they are practically uncrackable. The latest Dr. Dobb's Journal had a few ads on them. Otto J.
