During most operations, the computer will still be using bitmaps similar to (or identical to) the current font resources. Only when you change typefaces or type sizes will the system have to use the outline font descriptions. Those will be used to construct a bitmap in the size and style you've requested. If you use lots and lots of fonts in a single document, you may find things slowed down significantly. But I think that for the most part outline fonts shouldn't slow things down too much even on a Mac Plus.
