I received Colony, Pirates, and The Hunt for Red October last week as birthday presents. At first glance at them I thought I'd like The Hunt for Red October the best, then Colony, and finally would just tolerate Pirates. Boy was I wrong! I find the Hunt for Red October EXTREMELY tedious to play. It's also very difficult to keep from getting killed instantly by Soviet ASW forces. After playing with it for many hours and being sunk countless times, I've set the game aside for the time being. Perhaps at sometime in the future it will appeal to me more. I usually like "war games", but this one I don't care for at all at the moment. Next came Colony. This game will drive you totally nuts, unless you find one of those files available on most BBS's that give you a map of the colony. I found a set of MacDraw files mapping the Colony levels that are really outstanding, in that they show the layout without giving away any details on what you'll find in the various areas. The problem with not having maps is that the game has a definite and VERY urgent real-time basis. You'll find yourself having to move fast to blast the aliens and scrounge up enough energy to keep your armored battle suit going. If you have to be drawing a map at the same time, you'll go bonkers! Computer Gaming World actually suggests that you play the game with TWO people, one controlling the game and one doing the mapping. With an already prepared map, the game is ALOT of fun and still very challenging. I especially enjoyed accessing all of the MANY Macintosh computers found in the colony and slowly building up an information base on what happened there. The "slide show" that's encountered was also very interesting. The real-time graphics are simply amazing! I definitely recommend this game highly! Finally, the biggest surprise was Pirates. I REALLY enjoy playing this game. It has a few problems, like difficulty in quitting a game in progress without "retiring", and a complete abandonment of the Mac interface. But all in all, it's an extremely fun game with a fascinating amount of historical background thrown in. The manual is practically a book on the culture, economics, and political history of the Caribbean region from the 1500's through the early 1700's. The game shows a great sense of humor and fun at dealing with the difficulties of being a pirate captain and keeping your crew happy. I normally HATE arcade style games, but even the arcade-like sword fighting that takes place in the game is well done and quite fun. There's a tremendous variety of things to do in this game, fortunes to be made (and lost!), and a little bit of history to pick up in the process.
