Stop the presses, I have solved my own problem.  The solution was to select
a LaserWriter in the Chooser of the Mac that does not have a printer, thus
making Word believe that there is a printer and formatting accordingly.

This may sound trivial, but was not so trivial to find.  So, thanks anyway
for any consideration you might have offered.
