My story has a happy ending. Aron Roberts sent me the necessary
patch. Apparently the call to SysBeep was hanging the System.

The patch is quite straightforward. Replace the 3 occurences of:

3F 3C 00 05 A9 C8

with NOPs:

4E 71 4E 71 4E 71

The three occurences are very near each other.
