I received mail from Robert Stanzel of Apollo 
who gave me some good pointers.  He said that 
the following individuals have done some
GCC/COFF work that might be useful.

    John Vasta (vasta@apollo.com) wrote and hands out an
    a.out-to-(apollo)-COFF translator.

Robert says at least two other folks have written 
COFF backends for gas:


1) The following person has a COFF-gas for version 1.25

   Allan G. Schrum
   ..!gatech!rebel!didsgn!allan

2) The following individual also has a COFF producing gas,  he 
   claims it is an older version of gas as well.
