In my younger days as a bicycle rider I found that I could usually trigger the car detectors for traffic lights by riding my bicycle so that the wheels ran exactly over, and in the same direction as, the cuts in the pavement where the wires for the car detector loop were buried. I would usually stop to wait for the light to change with both wheels sitting on this cut.
