Well, making the assumption that you're using Unix...

    RCS (Revision Control System)
     -or-
    SCCS (Source Code Control System)
    diff (esp. context diff)
    perl (for wholesale batch text editing, it's better than sed)
    tcsh or bash (love that filename completion...)
