The recommended distance for watching HDTV is between 3 and 4 times the picture height. The recommended distance for NTSC is between 6 and 7 times the picture height. With a 20" monitor, a distance of 9 feet is 9 times the picture height, so such a result isn't unexpected. The Media Lab is a bunch of Nazi, er, NTSC apologists.
