I was a bit surprised at the number of people this has happened to.

I was told by at CATS that this is a known but elusive bug in
WorkBench.  The missing files are moved to some other directory.  This
was indeed my case, I found them in Empty.  So if this happens to you,
fear not do a "dir opt a" or use the "whereis" utility of your choice 
to search the disk volume.  (But just in case, I always have two backups.)
