This seems to be the only option, other than shareware, wherer you can try something out to see if you like it before you buy it. In fact, for the commercially available programs, renting it to see if it's worth the asking price is reasonable. This is not advocating piracy, since I'm not saying "Copy these programs", just try them out. The only other option is to look for reviews and articles on the software and study before you buy.
